The island was originally used as a pineapple plantation, and then, from 1905 until 1978, it was used as a fishing resort called "Pelican Island." In 1979, it became Nettles Island and has been home to many wealthy families ever since.
Nettles Island has been featured in several magazines and newspapers over the past few decades for being one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in town. In recent years, it's been named by both Forbes and Money Magazine as one of the top 10 richest towns in Florida.
