Loggerhead Marinelife Center

Loggerhead Marinelife Center

Oct 07, 2021

Eleanor Fletcher, a long-time Juno Beach resident, founded what is now Loggerhead Marinelife Center more than 35 years ago. Eleanor and her husband Robert owned and operated a real estate company in Juno Beach. Eleanor became aware of the large number of sea turtles breeding on our beach throughout the spring and summer. She was intrigued by the fact that so many hatchlings chose to land rather than return to sea after hatching, and as a consequence, initiated some of the first studies on sea turtles in our region. Juno Beach is currently regarded as one of the world's most active nesting beaches! Eleanor earned the nickname "The Turtle Lady" throughout the neighborhood.

The organization changed its name to Loggerhead Marinelife Center in April 2007 after relocating to a new 12,000 square foot certified "green" building. The new facility will include a state-of-the-art full-service veterinary hospital, an exhibit hall, an outdoor classroom, a research laboratory, and a resource center. A tour would be incomplete without a visit to the marine-themed gift shop, which has a great variety of children's educational books as well as unusual gift and craft products. There is a guarded beach, a nature walk, a playground, and picnic pavilions in the park.

Thousands of school students now visit the facility each year via field excursions, outreach programs, summer camp, and other educational opportunities. Additionally, the facility receives over 350,000 visitors each year who come to view the exhibits and the sea turtle hospital - the only one between Orlando and the Florida Keys!

Loggerhead Marinelife Center is a non - profit education and ocean conservation institution situated in Palm Beach County, Florida, on the Atlantic Ocean. The facility is home to a variety of displays, as well as live sea turtles and other marine life. The museum's exhibits include a huge ancient Archelon sea turtle model, saltwater aquarium, displays of local animals, and educational displays on South Florida's marine environment.
